Jalal Haji Abdul Carim Sahib (1865-1939) was an Indian Businessman. He started his career with a humble beginning and went on to become a tycoon of the leather industry managing an industrial empire which is unparalleled till date. He played a key role in the Transformation of Leather Industry in South India and is popularly known as the "Leather King"

He was the founding senior partner of ''M/s. Roshan N.M.A Carim Omer & Co''., a large company turned up as an industrial empire in the tanning world.
He is Hailed as the "Leather king" for the virtue of his knowledge and experience in various grades of East India Tanned Leather. He owned and managed 27 tanneries in India and over 100 Raw Skin purchasing centers throughout India, Tanning bark and Myrobalam. There were branches at Rangoon, Mandalay, Singapore, Surabaya and sales branches at Japan and England.
Some of the big firms like M/s. Best & Co., Shaw Wallace, Simson and Mc.Connechy, South India Export Company were buying agents, Bulk of them were exported to foreign companies such as G.O. Liddel, London, Tanners Hide Buying Association, Liverpool, T.N. and H.F. Briggs, Leicester etc.
At a time when seamless communication was a distant dream, he believed in creating a cogent product, Penetration into territories never heard of before and develop an industry that is Methodical, which he did to a large extent. He created Jobs & opportunities for Direct and Indirect employment and had resources deployed across India & other Global centers.He has set a precedent for the next-gen entrepreneurs to follow.
When the Leather industry had minimal presence in South India, It was Jalal Abdul Carim Sahib's vision to bring a level of sophistication seldom seen before in Leather Industry. He led this empire with an objective to deliver high value business benefits for stakeholders and to provide an opportunity of growth and development for everyone involved. The outcome of his vision is one of the key reasons why Ambur and its surrounding neighbors stand tall today.
He led the company with his sharp acumen and astute businessman ship even in times of dire crisis during the first world war. He started the Roshan Motor Company importing cars in lieu of the balance of payment and made huge profits.
The book "(Madras Tercentenary Commemoration Volume )" issued by the establishment of Madras to celebrate 300 years of Madras City provides a worthy mention of the company M/s. Roshan N.M.A Carim Oomer & Co along with the founder Jalal Abdul Carim Sahib and their expertise and domination in the Leather domain.
This is just one of the several instances which reflect the magnitude at which this company led in the Indian Leather industry.
Jalal Abdul Carim Sahib was one of the first founding member of the Committee of Southern India Skin and Hide Merchants Association from 1917 to 1929 and became Hony.Treasurer from 1929.
